Slow But Sure

I started playing with all my new toys: camera, speedlight, umbrella. I was breezing through the Strobist assignments, or so it seemed, but got stuck. I spent hours one evening trying to imitate the "specular highlights" of a portrait. I never did get it, and gave up after a number of things started to fall around me.

However, I did notice something during that time. Even though I didn't accomplish what I set out to do that evening, I noticed that my comfortability around the camera and speedlight is increasing. I no longer fumble around to find one setting or another, especially if I've used it any number of times. That's encouraging to me.

So, where do I want to go with this now that I've had my camera a whole three weeks. Perhaps I should say what I'd rather never do: Sports, Wedding, Product photography. All three seem so boring or very competitive.

I do like the thought of Street Photography, where photographing people in their normal environments is the goal, and have been toying around with how to make that work to my advantage especially if it's possible to do it in a foreign venue. In other words, how to make that kind of photography a career? In the meantime I'm leaning towards real estate and/or interior photography . I'm purchasing Scottt Hargis' book and video series on the matter this weekend.
