Of Toys and Playing

It's been a couple of days since I got all my new photography toys. After my wife went to bed the last two nights, I set it all up and started snapping. First I followed the assignments of the strobist website, then I just experimented with distance, angle, flash intensity, and white balance. Actually white balance was as afterthought after a lot of my photos had a blue sheet instead of the original white sheet. This is going to be some fun exercises over the next few weeks.

Even the WB issue is something that will be stored away in my head for some time. I may not remember exactly how to fix it but that it was a WB issue. What threw me off was that the WB symbol for incandescent was a flash or a bulb. For some reason, I equated that to a strobe flash. So, for future reference, if my colors are coming out orange, blue, or green, the issue is white balance. It's filed away somewhere now.

The other thing I was toying with these last few days is the camera on my Samsung Galaxy SIII. That is a fascinating piece of technology with a ton of options for better photography. Here's a quote from Ken Rockwell, if you can't take a great photo with an iPhone, what makes you think you'll take a great photo with a more expensive camera?

And the third thing I was "researching" was that of Street Photography. Of course, there are as many theories and ethics about this as there are methods of doing it. The general consensus is that you can't make money doing it but there are a few who say you can.
